To disable it simply put inside your .bash_profile this export string:
export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1
Then logoff and login again.

Pango is used only for some particular languages (ie. indian) so if you don’t need to read site with those you’ll not note anything.

Tonight I’ve forged one on my first RPM package for Fedora Core 5, this package is SLAB the new Gnome menu created from Novell for the upcoming Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop.

Actually SLAB isn’t very platform indipendend because it need some enhancement done by Novell to Gnome, ie. the latest used applications doesn’t work at all.

Moreover in the code there are some call to SuSe application (such YaST and Zen-Updater), I’ve hacked a little the schemas to use only Gnome, or at least Fedora, similar applications (ie. gnome-newtork-schema, gnome-yelp, Fedora pup and pirut).

I’ll upload the RPM as soon as possible on my official italian blog, so feel free to test it but remember that:

• this is my first real RPM, I’ve not (yet) studied nothing about dependancies, lib or whatever
• this is a package of a UNSTABLE software wrote for ANOTHER distro
• Beagle should be enabled
• To add the new main-menu applet to your panel after the installation you need to restart Gnome, a simple logoff should be fine.

Who organize is the GrUSP, a national PUG, php user group, which I am member of.

Actually we’ve started the Call for Paper (open both in english and italian) and the Call for Sponsors for the companies which want to show their name in an event like that. There will be different kind of sponsorizationship, probably three, based on differents criteria.
I’ll talk about them as soon will be published on the official site.

Btw, this year the phpDay will have 2 differents paths one more technical and advanced and the other one easier and focuses also on php software.

• in the advanced path the speakers can talks abouts new development methods, security and technics, frameworks and php-related problems (like server optimization and *sql problems)
• in the presentation/introductive path the talks will be about software solutions write in and for php (ie. phpSomethings or Zend Studio) and other arguments like library how-to or introduction to the language.

Last edition phpDay had quite 400 visitors and will hope to increase that number this year!

Come annunciato qualche giorno fa è stato aperto ufficialmente il call for paper del phpDay.

Se volete discutere di php davanti ad un centinaio di persone e pensate di avere buone argomentazioni mandateci qualche info.

Durante la manifestazione ci saranno 2 differenti percorsi di talk (tenuti parallelamente in due aulee):

• Avanzati/Tecnici: durante i quali si potrà discutere di qualche nuova tecnica di sviluppo, dell’utilizzo di una certa libreria e/o framework, di ottimizzazione e di problematiche correlate con lo sviluppo (ie. configurazione avanza di server)
• Introduzione/Presentazione: presentazione di prodotti opensource e non realizzati con php o che ne riguardano l’uso (ie. IDE), introduzione a metodologie di programmazione non eccessivamente avanzate, presentazione di temi non direttamente pertinenti con il php (ie. contrattualistica, licenze, etc)

Per quanto riguarda gli sponsor verrà presentato sul sito a breve un’apposita paginetta con le tipologie di sponsorizzazioni che offriamo (per ora si parla di 3 tipologie che spaziano dal banner online alla presenza su cartelloni e/o manifesti presenti nelle aulee delle conferenze).

Actually the development is very slowly, the first reason is that all the developer are very busy with their paid jobs and the second one is that the code isn’t very easy to manage (it has a lot of library file and code redundancies).

phpCollab has grown a lot and with a lot of different parents, so now there’s a lot of hard-reading code without a single line of comment .

Quite a month ago during an hack for a client, I’ve decided, for the next third release [maybe in the year 2135.... ], to rewrite all the code using php 5 (with a DB layer like creole/propel), a modular/pluggable approach like WP and off course a lot of ajax.

For the latest two item there wasn’t a problem, but some of community members were not very happy about the use of php5. Actually the software has quite 2 thousands (known) installation around the world and a lot of them are on old server with php older than 4.4.x and the users don’t want to have problem with php 5 incompatibilities. Maybe php 5 (and its goodies) isn’t yet well suited for an application like phpCollab? Or a pragmatic php 4 OO rewrite is enought?

Does anyone has some case studies about php 4 to 5 software migration?

That is a wonderfull drink that can be bought only in Cosenza (Calabria, Italy) and is made only with coffee, carbonated water and sugar (mmh… it’s like a coffee-soda).

It has a very long story and is very appreciated in Cosenza but, I don’t know why, it isn’t reselled anywhere outside there.

Maybe I’ll suggest to the guys on ThinkGeek to add that on the caffeine category of their shop.
